Historic and rare George III sterling silver twin-handled, lidded trophy cup hallmarked London 1813 by William Burwash. The cup has been engraved slightly later in the George IV era (1829) as a horse racing trophy for the short-lived racecourse at Aston Somerville, Worcestershire. The trophy comes from an era where wealthy landowners such as the Crowthers could set up a racecourse on their land and charge the public to attend races.Often the trophies would be provided by the landowners too. This superb, heavy trophy is internally gilded with a pineapple finial and the beautiful engraving reads. ASTON SOMERVILLE, FIRST RACE CUP with Thirty-five Sovereigns added. From the engraving I believe this impressive trophy was probably for the first ever race at the Aston Somerville course. NOTE: The discovery of this trophy has helped rewrite the history of Aston Somerville Racecourse.
Prior to its discovery it was thought the first meeting was held in 1836 as this coincides with the first newspaper report. However records have now been amended to show the earliest meeting being in 1829, the date on the trophy. Height (including lid): 275 mm. Diameter of rim: 170 mm.Diameter of base: 110 mm. Maker's Mark: William Burwash. Aston Somerville: A small village approx. 3 miles south of Eveshem in Worcestershire.
Historically the village consisted of three farms (known as Lower, Middle & Upper Farms) albeit they have usually been farmed as one estate most notably attached to the Crowther Family in the 19th Century (see trophy engraving). I believe this trophy was probably for the first ever race on the Aston Somerville course and the final meeting took place on Wednesday 27th January 1864. Summary: Rarely do such historic and impressive horse racing trophies come on to the market. The trophy is important in the social history of Aston Somerville as I believe it was the first trophy ever won on the course.
