1820 English Georgian Sterling Silver Cut Crystal Standish Inkstand Desk Set

1820 English Georgian Sterling Silver Cut Crystal Standish Inkstand Desk Set. Presented is a fine English Georgian sterling silver and cut crystal standish, or inkstand. This set dates to 1820. The set consists of a stand with inkwell, sander, and candle holder with snuffer.

All the pieces are original and hallmarked. The glass bodies are beautifully cut with a diamond pattern. The tray itself has a gadrooned edge with scallop shell adornments at intervals around the rim. The stand rests on four claw form feet with acanthus scroll decoration above. Stand: 9 by 6 ¼ by 1 ¾ inches, LxWxH.

Inkwell: 1 ¾ inches tall. Sand caster: 1 ¾ inches tall. Stamp/wax box: 1 5/8 inches tall.

Candlestick holder with snuffer: 2 5/8 inches tall. The set is in good overall condition. One of the bottles has a chip along the bottom edge, which is not visible when the bottle is set in the slot on the tray. There are some other much more minor chips here and there to the other glass pieces, but these are hard to notice.

The lid of the inkwell has a split to the interior lip, which could easily be solder repaired, but as it can't be seen when the lid is on and doesn't effect the function of the piece we have left it as is. There are no other issues. Each piece of the set is hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard's head crowned for the city of London, the date letter e for 1820, and the maker's mark WE possibly for William Eaton or William Elliott. The rims of the bottles, the lid of the wax box, the bobeche of the candlestick holder, and the tray itself also have the duty stamp of King George III's head. The two lids do not have the King George III mark but have all the other marks. The total weight for the set is 1082 grams or 38.2 regular ounces. The weighable silver weight is 699 grams or 24.7 regular ounces. There is more sterling silver in the set than this weight indicates, but some of it is in the silver mounts on the glass bottles, which we cannot weigh alone. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution.
