Welcome to William Sharpe Antiques. Here today for your consideration we are proud to present this rare large eighty-four piece assembled sterling silver cutlery set, with each and every fork and spoon hallmarked for London, c-1798. This incredible setting includes twelve tablespoons, twelve dessert spoons, twelve teaspoons, twelve dinner forks, twelve entree forks, twelve dinner knives and twelve entree knives. The knives are later (as original knives would have rusted away by now) but are an excellent match, having sterling silver handles and stainless steel blades. The makers and weights are as follows.
Tablespoons: Henry Nutting (5), Richard Crossley (4), George Smith II (1), George Smith II & Thomas Hayter (1), and Thomas Wallis II (1). Dessert Spoons: William Eley & William Fearn (12). Teaspoons: Worn (6), Stephen Adams (2), Solomon Hougham (2), Samuel Godbehere & Edward Wigan (1), and Richard Crossley (1). Dinner Forks: William Eley & William Fearn (10), and Richard Crossley (2). Entree Forks: Worn (4), Thomas Wallis II (3), Thomas Harper I (3), Richard Crossley (1), and Solomon Hougham (1).Total silver weight: 2,395gms. Dinner & Entree Knives: C J Vander Ltd of Sheffield, c-1972.
24.5cm and 21.5cm long respectively. This superb set has been created using pieces designed in the Old English pattern, with each piece free from monogram or hallmark. The matching is so good in fact that it is near impossible to detect the presence of more than one maker throughout the entire set.Condition is very good overall, with no atypical damage to note. The spoon bowls are free from major obtrusion, the fork tines are full and sharp and the knives appear to have seen very little use. The hallmarks are relatively good overall, with some makers wearing and others starting to fade (fading most prominent in the teaspoons).
Originals can be provided to interested parties if required. All in all, this truly is an incredible set that has been painstakingly assembled by a most fastidious connoisseur. Early sets of this calibre rarely hit the market, so don't delay.
