Antique Georgian/Victorian Sterling Silver, Glass & Amethyst Buckle Paste Brooch. The spectacular black dot paste at the border of this brooch was originally a Georgian shoe buckle. During the Victorian era someone decided to slide in a central paste stone in order to make it into a fashionable brooch. It was expertly done and sits inside the frame snugly for a seamless look. Paste is a term that refers to the glass stones crafted prior to the 1930s that was made to simulate the sparkle of natural gemstones.
The techniques for creating these glass stones were sophisticated, and quality paste pieces were desired by high society members and even royalty. At the fundamental level, the technique involved leaded glass that was cut, foiled at the back, and polished until sparkly. The silver has a bright patina without any dents and a moderate amount of surface wear. The paste has a smooth surface with crisp faceting and little surface wear. There are two of the bordering stones that look like they are replacements and not original but the were cut professionally and are a nice match.
There is some rusting and discoloration to the foiling at the back of the paste which dims the sparkle some - particularly on the amethyst paste and it dims the black dot on some of the paste. The central component was added likely during the Victorian era when it was converted into a brooch. This antique beauty measures 1 3/8" x 1" and weighs 17 grams. Very unusual and impressive piece!
