George III hallmarked Sterling Silver Pillar Candlestick (18cm) 1809
This impressive candlestick is made from sterling silver although the base and stem are filled to provide structure and stability. It is of pillar form with a plain stem which has a fluted knop to the bottom and a wide base with a band of pronounced fluting. The removable sconce has roped detail around the edge and will accommodate a candlestick measuring up to 2.1cm (0.8) in diameter. It is hallmarked to the base for Sheffield 1809 with the makers mark of John Roberts & Co. And although still readable, there is some rubbing to the mark. The sconce has the Lion Passant, Duty mark and makers mark showing it is original to the stick. This candlestick stands nice and vertical, the decorative detail is wonderfully crisp and it is still usable. However, after 210 years, there are some issues to bring to your attention which Ive tried to show in the photos below. To the stem, there are a number of dents, bruises and dints. The most noticeable are a 1cm long dent near the top and two 5mm long ones a bit further round. In addition, there are about 9 small dints in various other places. To the plain section at the top of the base there are 2 dents and a dint which produce a visible area of bruising about 2.5cm (1) long. A bit further round, there is a light 5mm line bruise and, overall, another 5 dints.

These things make areas of the base appear dimpled. To the fluting around the base, there are 2 pea-sized dents and a smaller dent to another. The edge of the base has a few dints and dinks.

The sconce fits nice and securely in its cup and has no damage except to the bottom edge of the inner sleeve where a section has bent over slightly. However, the top of the sconce cup has suffered a knock and 2 areas bow down. Only one of these is visible when the sconce is in place but can only really be seen from underneath. The material covering the base is secure but very stained and it has worn away from the edge on one side. All aspects are shown in the photos below and reflected in the asking price for what is still a beautiful and functional piece of Georgian silverware.
