Georgian Sterling Silver Sugar Basket. This beautiful little basket is made from sterling silver in the form of a pail with a swing handle. It is exquisitely decorated to the main body with flowers and scrolling foliage, the rim has roped decoration which is mirrored in finer detail around the base. The handle has a barley twist design and, to the top, there is a small plate with foliate decoration. Please note that there is an area of very noticeable damage to the back as fully described below. The base is clearly hallmarked for London 1767 with the makers mark of Thomas Foster. This basket comes complete with what I believe is its original blue glass liner. Please note the size of this piece as it is relatively small because sugar was a luxury in the 18. It would also make a wonderful master salt cellar or a preserve pot. With the exception of the damage, this basket is in beautiful condition with no splits, kinks or dents and the decorative work is nice and crisp. The handle does stand upright but has a natural tendency to fall to a 45 degree angle. Unfortunately, as you can see from the photos, there is an area of missing decoration to the back (measuring 3cm by 2cm). Below it, there is a small dink to the edge of the base and, above, there is a split between a piece of the foliage and another piece. Although this area is noticeable, it can be placed out of view at the back and doesnt affect the use of the basket. Clearly, this is not a piece for a specialist collector but it might make a wonderful start for someone beginning a collection. The glass liner is in good order with the exception of a small chip to the rim. All aspects are shown in the photos below and reflected in the low asking price for tis 251 year old piece of Georgian history. Height - 10.2 cm (4) to the top of the upright handle 6.3 cm (2.5) to the rim Diameter - 7 cm (2.75) across the rim 4.5 cm (1.75) across the base Weight - 56 grams (weight of silver without liner) 179 grams (combined weight of silver & liner).
