Georgian Sterling silver cruet stand and cruets
Please note that we are glass experts and not silver experts so please advise us of any corrections necessary in our description. This is what we believe to be a Georgian (George III) set of cut glass cruets and Sterling silver stand dating from the beginning of the 19th century, c1802. The cruets and stand are in excellent condition for their age. This means, of course, that they show the age related wear and tear commensurate with some 200 years of use. The stand is of Sterling silver with a wooden base that carries a collector's or stockist's label. It is of navette shape with a central handle and divider and sits on four spatula legs. It carries a hallmark to the bottom rim for the lion passant, London (crowned leopard head), the sovereign's head and the date letter "G" which we believe to be 1802. There is an indistinct maker's mark which looks like "SH" and could refer to Solomon Hougham. The hallmark is repeated on the inside base of the stand, and on the divider, although even more indistinctly.

The stand is nicely worked with a formal band of tooling and has an oval within a cartouche on one side for a monogram which is left blank. The cruets are cylinder-shaped and are decorated with the same cutting so probably originated and stayed as a set. The set consists of a salt and pepper shaker, vinegar and oil dispensers, a dry mustard pot and two small cruets, one of which contains a small silver serving spoon. All the caps are of Sterling silver and all bear the same hallmark as the stand.

The bases of the cruets are plain, and sport polished pontil marks. The stand has small dents to one end of the stand but is otherwise in excellent condition, although it would benefit from a professional clean.

There are minute chips to the bases of the cruets and the cut facets and end of the stoppers but no prominent chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. A particularly clean and pleasing set that would happily grace a modern table.

The set weighs 1.9 Kg. The item "Georgian Sterling silver cruet stand and cruets" is in sale since Tuesday, October 2, 2018. This item is in the category "Antiques\Silver\Solid Silver\Other Solid Silver". The seller is "theworldismadeofglassltd" and is located in Brislington.
