Superb Georgian sterling silver sauce tureen, fully hallmarked for London 1801. This is a lovely silver sauce tureen made in the reign of King George III by Daniel Pontifex in London 1801. The tureen has the crest of the Churchill family of Blenheim Palace with crown and C. The tureen has a domed and fluted lid with ring leaf handle and cut out for the sauce ladle.
The top rim of the body of the tureen has a gadrooned border above curving shdes and a spreading oval base with matching band of gadrooned decoration and it stands on a rectangular base. The tureen has a blue glass liner - which whilst it fits perfectly I believe is a replacement. The underside of the tureen has wood base.
The tureen is 7 inches / 178 mm wide, 4-1/4 inches / 108 mm deep and it stands 6-1/2 inches / 165 mm high. The tureen weighs 772 grams without the glass liner and 1,134 grams in total. The tureen has clear hallmarks - lion passant, London mark, duty mark, letter F for 1801 and maker's mark DP for Daniel Pontifex.The tureen is in good condition and the liner is without chips, cracks or damage.
