STERLING SHELL DISH c1905 - GEORGIAN RE-CREATION. A very fine and rare turn of the century Graff, Washbourne & Dunn sterling silver shell form basket or entree dish.

A superb re-creation of a c1745 British form. Illustrated and discussed in Waldron page 117. G W & D trace their roots to the famed New York silversmith William Gale, who opened his shop in 1833.

They succeeded Wood & Hughes, two of Gale's apprentices in 1899. The piece was retailed by Howard & Co. Fashioned in the form of a scallop shell with gently rippling gadrooned rim and shimmering smooth surface radiating panel. Some of the original George II designs included caryatid or maiden handles, here we see a back swept leaf crown scroll handle, with larger leaf center, framed by leafy vine. Atop robust four leaf cap lion paw and claw pad tip feet.

This Graff, Washbourne & Dunn sterling shell & lion foot dish. Is 10 inches by 9 inches and weighs a bit over 26 standard ounces.

Interior clean as if little used. The item "Howard Sterling Shell Dish c1905 Recreation George III" is in sale since Thursday, December 5, 2019.
