Paul Storr is widely regarded as the finest English silversmith of the 19th century but in fact his mark was registered in 1793 and so he started in the 18th. This lovely coffee biggin or hot water jug and stand were hallmarked in London 1796/7 so it is one of his earlier pieces. The pot and stand are in very good condition with no repair or damage and indeed it seems that the Pot has had very little, if any, use. It stands on 4 legs and the entire piece is beautifully decorated. There is a scroll wooden handle and all pieces are clearly hallmarked.
It has the original burner but the lower part of the burner is missing. The decoration includes two ornate cartouches which have identical armorial and the Latin motto "Virtute Tutus". A fine and imposing piece of Georgian silver from a maker destined to become a renowned silversmith for English royalty for the next few decades. The item "Paul Storr Georgian Antique English Sterling Silver Coffee Biggin and Stand" is in sale since Thursday, October 26, 2017.
