This is a lovely antique sterling silver mufineer or small caster made by specialist maker Samuel Wood and hallmarked in London 1736. It is in very good condition with no repairs or damage and made with a heavy gauge of silver.
Hallmarks are clearly struck and the pull off lid, that fits tightly, is beautifully pierced. A sleeve has been inserted into the lid, not entirely uncommon, that has the effect of restricting the flow from the caster - possibly so it could be used for finer spices or pepper. Samuel Wood was a specialist caster maker and his work is exhibited in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. The item "Samuel Wood 1736 Georgian Antique English Sterling Silver Caster Shaker" is in sale since Sunday, April 16, 2017.
