This is a superb pair of antique George 111 sterling silver sauce tureens made by William Holmes and hallmarked in London 1779. They are in very good condition with no repair or damage.Oval in shape they stand firmly on a raised base and the tops of the lids are finished with an olive shaped finial. The loop handles have reeded decoration and also applied acanthus decoration. The upper and lower rims have bead decoration and there is a ram's head engraved on both tureens. Hallmarks are identical and clearly struck to the bases and partial hallmarks to the lids.
They have been made with a heavy gauge of silver - altogether a fine pair of Georgian silver tureens. (NB any shadows shown in the photographs are merely reflections). Total weight 1040 gms (36.75 ozs). Width 23 cms (9 ins). Height 15 cms (6 ins).
